Common roadside weed in Barongarook and surrounds

Colac Otway Shire weeds brochure

The major issue addressed by the group to date is the need for sustained integrated weed control as a precursor to all other environmental works (eg riparian protection).   We have prepared lists of local weeds and their control options, and devised a gorse management plan for their area.  The group works with the Colac Otway Shire to target areas alongside roadside weed control programs.

Otway Community College Conservation & Land Management students participate in practical learning such as weed removal (spraying, cut & paint, etc), conduct weed treatment trials, mapping and management planning.

The BLG are offering incentives to landholders with Barongarook Creek frontage to achieve long term gorse control.  We are working downstream, currently gaining support from Colac residents and businesses to clean up and revegetate the Barongarook Creek through Colac.
